About Handwriting to Text

Handwriting to Text extracts text from images using the industry-standard Tesseract engine, running entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. That means you can convert screenshots, scanned documents, receipts, business cards, whiteboard photos, book pages and more into editable text — without uploading anything to a server. Your images stay on your device from start to finish, which is important for confidential material like medical records, legal contracts or private correspondence.

The tool supports over a dozen languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Arabic and Hindi. First-time use downloads a small language pack (~2 MB) which is then cached locally for future runs, so subsequent OCR jobs are near-instant. You can pick multiple languages in a single pass for mixed-language documents like bilingual menus, subtitled screenshots or academic papers.

Popular use cases include: digitising handwritten class notes into searchable text, extracting quotes from books or PDFs for research citations, pulling text out of screenshots for translation into another language, converting paper receipts into typed expense reports for accounting, digitising old letters and family history documents, extracting source code from screenshots posted on Stack Overflow or Twitter, and translating menus, signs or product labels from photos taken while travelling abroad.

Accuracy is best on high-contrast, sharp, well-lit images — think black text on white paper. For handwritten text, use the dedicated Handwriting to Text tool which is tuned for less regular characters. For skewed or low-contrast scans, run the Scan Document and Deskew Document tools first to clean up the image, then OCR the result. Everything is free, private, and unlimited — no signup, no watermark, no daily cap. Perfect for students, journalists, researchers and anyone who needs fast, reliable text extraction.
